After sitting idle for ages through planning and preparation, I proudly write today that the renovation of Flagler Street, Miami’s storied main street has begun!
The plan, a joint effort funded by Miami’s Curtis + Rogers Design Studio, the City of Miami, Miami-Dade county, the Downtown Development Authority as well as property owners alongside the fabled street, brands itself as a “modernization” set to provide a pedestrian friendly promenade with new landscaping, upgraded sidewalks and street lighting. This beautification, set at a cost of $13 million dollars and expected to be finished by late 2017, aims to provide a friendlier, attractive destination for Downtown’s residents and workers. The main area of the renovation centers alongside Flagler and SW 1st Ave and is set to progress eastward on a half mile stretch to Biscayne Blvd.
Anyone that lives in Downtown would agree that a makeover for this Miami thoroughfare is long overdue. A quick stroll on Flagler Street today, with its cracked sidewalks and unkempt appearance will most likely ruin your shoes rather than make a lasting impression. In a neighborhood whose population has doubled over a 15 year period (from 40,000 to 80,000 as per the DDA as of 2014), this investment aims to bring back renewed energy to what has always been the core of activity to Miami’s commercial business district. Along with its aesthetic renovation comes a heightened emphasis on providing culinary and shopping opportunities, allowing for the planned development of restaurants, coffee shops and specialty stores designed to cater the ever growing number of Miami citizens living and working in Downtown.
With the help of a new, well deserved renovation, can Flagler Street replicate the success of local staple Lincoln Road in Miami Beach? Local officials seem to bet on it with this ambitious plan set to blend the old architecture and glamour of its past as seen with its older buildings and connecting it with a future worthy of being called Miami’s Main Street.
